 Al-Buraimi Seekers Come to Jesus We know that the Father is actively at work in Oman drawing people to His Son, Jesus. Researchers estimate that approximately 2.5% of any given population are open for religious change. So in Al-Buraimi region, that means approximately 3,045 people are potentially open! ‘Broad sowing’ initiatives are challenging in Oman, because of laws outlawing proselytization. However, social media campaigns are starting to connect with seekers and beginning to bear fruit. Today, let’s pray for seekers in Al-Buraimi region, and the social media efforts to reach them.

 Movements in Al-Buraimi Rapid Multiplication of Disciples and Churches We want to see the fullness of the Kingdom of God coming into every part of Al-Buraimi region, like yeast penetrating the entire batch of dough (Matt. 13:33). And the fastest way for this to happen is by rapidly reproducing disciples and groups (churches), who spread and multiply within and across their families, tribes, social networks, and societies. Acts 6:7 is our heart’s desire and fervent prayer: “God's word reigned supreme and kept spreading. The number of Jesus' followers in [Al-Batinah South] quickly grew and increased by the day.” Let’s pray for the church that will form in Al-Buraimi:

 Ripe Fields Praying for the Harvest in Al-Buraimi As you look around right now, wouldn’t you say that in about four months it will be time to harvest? Well, I’m telling you to open your eyes and take a good look at what’s right in front of you. These Al-Buraimi fields are ripe. It’s harvest time! (John 4:35–MSG) Al-Buriami has had much on-site residence of Kingdom workers over years, as home to a key language school in the region. However, on-site residence has lessened in the past few years. Pray for open doors for new people to once again come and live, study and work. Pray for more long-term workers to stay and work, after language school. Pray for the many, many seeds that have been sown in this region, with little known fruit. Let’s pray to the Lord of the Harvest, to thrust out more labourers, and to reap a great harvest here!

 July Focus: Muscat Region Anchor of Hope Muscat (Pop.: 1,302,440; Arabic: مسقط) is the capital of Oman, and the governmental, economic, social, and artistic centre of the Sultanate. It is the largest metropolitan area in the nation, and people from all across the country move there for work. Muscat Region has 6 districts: Al-Amerat, Bowsher, Muscat, Muttrah, Qurayyat, and Seeb. Muscat has been an important port and trading centre for centuries, and has been ruled at different points by Persia, Portugal, and the Ottoman Empire. It became Oman’s capital in 1793, and for a time was the seat of a naval empire that stretched from South Asia to East Africa. It came under British protection in the 1900s, but was reestablished in its own right as an influential capital under the rule of Sultan Qaboos (1970-2020). The meaning of the name 'Muscat' is disputed, but one interpretation is that it means 'anchor', related to the Arabic root 'to fall', or 'falling place.' “We have this certain hope like a strong, unbreakable anchor holding our souls to God himself. Our anchor of hope is fastened to the mercy seat in the heavenly realm beyond the sacred threshold, and where Jesus, our forerunner, has gone in before us.” (Hebrews 6:19-20) May many in this region discover the hope of Christ, the true anchor for their souls!

 Ibadi Islam, Part 1 A Minority Majority Oman is unique in the Muslim world in that it is neither predominantly Sunni nor Shi’a. Rather, its principal form of Islam is the Ibadi sect—the only country like this in the world. Small pockets of Ibadism can also be found in North Africa and Zanzibar, but only in Oman is it the dominant faith. Ibadis comprise approximately .1% of all Muslims, and more than 75% of the world's Ibadis are Omani. Official records of religious affiliation are not kept by the Omani government, and the statistics range widely. Some sources say that the Omanis (not including expat residents) are 45% Ibadi, 45% Sunni, and 5% Shi’ite. Other sources say that Ibadis make up nearly 75% of the population. However, regardless of numbers, Ibadi Islam is clearly the predominant branch, both in cultural influence and official authority. The current ruling dynasty of Oman is Ibadi, and for centuries Oman was an Ibadi Imamate (governed by the Ibadi religious leader). And indeed, the ‘personality’ of Oman as a nation is clearly shaped by Ibadi thought and practice. As we pray for Omanis following the majority faith, we will be focusing on the theme of Light. The God who spoke light into existence, saying, “Let light shine from the darkness,” is the very One who sets our hearts ablaze to shed light on the knowledge of God’s glory revealed in the face of Jesus, the Anointed One. (2 Corinthians 4:6, The Voice)

 Ibadi Islam, Part 2 History of Ibadism and the Ibadi Imamate in Oman Ibadism is arguably the oldest sect in Islam, with its roots predating the Sunni-Shi’a schism. Ibadism descended from the Kharijite movement which emerged in 656 AD, shortly after Muhammed’s death. The Kharijites arose during the early years of struggle for Caliph succession, rejecting both bloodline succession and close-association succession, and favouring election based on belief and piety. They were marked by conservatism and extremism, and were eventually driven out of Arabia. Some found a home in Basra, Iraq and it was here that Abdullah ibn Ibad developed a more moderate school of thought, and Ibadism was named after him. Jabir ibn Zayd, an Omani from Nizwa, studied under ibn Ibad, and after ibn Ibad’s death, he led the Ibadis to Oman, where the group found a safe haven. Protected from both Sunni and Shi’a neighbours by desert and sea, the Ibadis were incubated in the security of the Omani mountains. By approximately 750 AD, the Ibadis had established an Imamate in the Interior of Oman, with an elected Imam as ruler, and its capital in Rustaq. In the late 1780s, Ahmed Al Busaidi was elected Imam, but after his death, his rule was divided. The coastlands took up the hereditary dynastic rule of the Al Busaidi family and formed the Sultanate of Muscat. The Interior region wanted to continue with elected Imams, and they moved the Imamate's capital to Nizwa. The Imamate continued until 1959, when the Sultan of Muscat’s forces defeated the Imam’s forces in the Jebel Akhdar War. The Interior and the coastlands were finally united as ‘the Sultanate of Oman’ in 1970, in an effort to unify the regions and acknowledge the importance of the Omani Imamate. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. (John 3:19-21)

 Ibadi Islam, Part 4 Ibadi Poet Abu Muslim Al-Bahlani As mentioned yesterday, some Ibadi poets are seen as mystical. One such man was Abu Muslim Al-Bahlani (1860-1920), an Omani poet, scholar, mystic, and Ibadi jurist. UNESCO has honoured his significant cultural contributions in Omani culture, and to the world. His poetry is filled with religious thought as he praised God, decried his own struggles with Self and Satan, and repented of his sins. Here are some samples from his poetry: Indeed you are Allah, who is ancient, Single, unique, concealed and evident. Indeed you are Allah, who is high in beauty, Master everlasting by the greatness of the Great. Indeed you are Allah, who has no beginning to existence, Who neither generates nor has ancestors.  As-Seeb House of Blessing As-Seeb (Arabic: ٱلسِّيْب, pop. 470,878) is the largest city of Muscat Region, and seat of As-Seeb District (pop. 478,517). It has historically been a coastal fishing village, but now the district extends to the inland Hajar mountains. Historically, this area has been quite significant. The "Fort of Sibo" was part of a series of fortified cities that the Portuguese erected in the 1600s to control access to the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The fort has been demolished, and today at its former location stands the Muscat International Airport. As-Seeb is known for being the venue in which the ‘Treaty of Seeb’ agreement took place between the Imamate of Oman and the Sultanate of Muscat on September 25, 1920. This treaty divided Oman into two distinct regions, the interior and the coast, recognizing the autonomy of the interior Imamate, but also the sovereignty of the coastal Sultanate. As-Seeb is also home to several royal landmarks, including the Royal Stables and Equestrian Centre, the Royal Guard of Oman Technical College, and the Bait al Barakah palace (one of the Sultan’s residences, translated as ‘house of blessing). Your covenant is trustworthy, and You have promised these good things to your servant.  Bawshar Beauty Under Pressure Bawshar (Arabic: بوشر, pop. 362,523) is a city and seat of Bawshar District (pop. 382,184) in the Muscat Region. It is part of the larger Muscat urban area, with several neighbourhoods (previously villages) such as Al Khuwair, Sultan Qaboos City, Al Ghubra, Al Azaiba, Ghala, Al Sarooj, Bowsher Al Qadima, Al Ansab Sanab, Al Hamam, Al Awabi, and Al Misfah. There are numerous modern malls, universities, hospitals, and commercial centres in Bawshar. This area is known for its unique marble deposits. The light-coloured rock is considered to be the best marble deposit in Oman due to its attractive banding. Originally the rock was limestone and part of a coral reef, but developed into marble during the late Cretaceous period, around 70-90 million years ago, under intense geological pressure. "You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colours. So don't try to get out of anything prematurely.  Al-Amarat Life to the Full Al-Amarat (Arabic: العامرات, pop. 96,384) is a city and seat of Al-Amarat District (pop. 121,103) in the Muscat Region. It is on the backside of the mountains from Bawshar, and the drive to get there is renowned for its hairpin turns and sharp drop-offs. It hosts the annual Muscat festival, and has a world-class Cricket stadium. In Arabic, Al-Amarat can mean ‘full’, and the root word means ‘age’ or life. "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."  Old Muscat Ancient Fortified City Old Muscat (Arabic: مسقط القديمة, pop. 24,099) is the original historic city of Muscat and seat of the Muscat District (pop. 31,317). The old city of Muscat is separated from the rest of modern Muscat by coastal mountains. It is located along the Muttrah Corniche coastal road (entering via the Muscat Gate) between Port Sultan Qaboos and Al Bustan Beach. The old city is protected by a wall with round towers, built in 1625, on the western and southern sides. The Gulf of Oman and the surrounding mountains form a natural boundary to the east and north. Until the mid-20th century, the city gates were closed three hours after dusk. Local laws dictated that anyone on the streets after this time had to carry a lantern with them. In addition, smoking and the public playing of music was banned on the main streets of Muscat. There are several important sites here, including Al-Alam Palace, two forts on either side of the palace built by the Portuguese in the 1600s, and several museums and government offices. “Now Jericho [a fortified city with high walls] was tightly closed because [of the people’s fear] of the sons of Israel; no one went out or came in. The LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the mighty warriors. Now you shall march around the city, all the men of war circling the city once. You shall do this [once each day] for six days. Also, seven priests shall carry seven trumpets [made] of rams’ horns ahead of the ark; then on the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. When they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall cry out with a great shout (battle cry); and the wall of the city will fall down in its place, and the people shall go up, each man [going] straight ahead [climbing over the rubble].” (Joshua 6:1-5 AMP) We pray that the walls of fear in Old Muscat would come falling down!  Muttrah Ports and Shops Muttrah (Arabic: مطرح. pop. 230,881) is a city and district, part of the larger Muscat municipality. It is the iconic symbol of Oman, with its waterfront corniche, winding bazaar, historic Ottoman-era buildings and incense burner monument. Before the discovery of oil, Muttrah was the centre of commerce in Oman (Muscat), a significant trading stop for routes to India and China. Other landmarks include Port Sultan Qaboos, the fish market, and Sur Al-Lawatiah, a small enclave of Shi’ites. Muttrah Souq (traditional bazaar) is locally called ‘Ad-Dhalam’, or ‘Darkness’, as the sun does not penetrate into the narrow lanes of shops. Traditionally the stalls were built from mud and palm leaves, and shoppers would carry lanterns to make their way along. Today the souq is a prime tourist attraction, but is also frequented by locals in search of good deals on frankincense and other traditional household items. Port Sultan Qaboos has been the primary commercial port for the area (whereas the Muscat port was primarily for military use). Today the Sultan’s yacht is docked there, as well as cruise ships when they make a port of call. For the next several days (July 14-22), the Logos Hope ship will be docked here, welcoming people aboard to visit ‘the world’s largest floating book fair’ and participate in various cultural shows and exhibitions. Please pray for the light of Jesus to shine forth during this time, and for many in Muttrah and beyond to be drawn to and engage with Truth and Love!
