 The Bedouin, Part 3 Songs and Poetry Bedouin people have a deep love for poetry which has been passed down through tradition. Historically the poets had an important position in the tribes. Poetry has been a way to recount history and tradition, and the poetry is usually sung, and often accompanied by instruments. Al Taghrooda, Al Razfa, and Al Bar'ah are all forms of Omani Bedouin performing arts protected as UNESCO World Heritage items. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. (Psalm 40:3) Lord, we ask You to equip Bedouin believers to use their style of poetry to develop local worship and praise to Jesus.  The Bedouin, Part 4 Good Shepherd of the Shepherds The Bedouin are traditionally shepherds, raising camels, goats and/or sheep. Though the majority now have moved to permanent housing, many still keep a small flock of animals. Omani Bedouin still bring their livestock to traditional markets, usually on Fridays and to special Eid holiday markets. Approximately 1/4 of Oman's meat and dairy products are supplied by local Bedouin. Jesus said: “I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” (John 10:14) Heavenly Father, we ask that the Bedouin across Oman will come to know Jesus as the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for them, that they will learn to know His voice and follow Him.  The Bedouin, Part 5 Daughters of Sarah Working alongside the men of the tribe to survive in the harsh desert environment, Bedouin women are strong and independent. Although traditional conservative values often keep women segregated from men in a separate section of the tent, they nevertheless are empowered and wield influence. Traditionally, Bedouin children stay with their mothers in the women's section of the tent until they are about seven years old. The women's responsibilities include tending to the children; gathering fuel for cooking; preparing meals; sewing; collecting and weaving the animal hair; and tearing down and setting up camp. Bedouin women in Oman are often recognized by their distinctive face mask, called a batula. It traditionally served to protect women’s faces from the desert sun and sand, and also provided modesty when intermixing with men. The women also wear colorful clothing and elaborate gold or silver jewelry, a convenient way to carry their wealth. Abraham’s wife Sarah was a quintessential Bedouin woman, living the nomadic life with her husband in a tent. May Sarah’s faith be an inspiration to Bedouin women today! And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered Him faithful who had made the promise. (Hebrews 11:11) We bless the Bedouin women of Oman to believe in God and His promises in His Word! May they find God to be faithful to them, just as He was to Sarah!  Sinaw Treasure in a Jar of Clay Sinaw (Arabic: سناو, pop. 19,643) is a town and seat of the newly-formed Sinaw District in Ash-Sharqiyah North Region. Formerly part of Al-Mudhaibi District, the Sinaw District was formed in 2022. It is a typical market-town in the region, known for its handicraft market on Saturdays, and livestock market on Thursdays. In 1979, a glazed earthenware pot containing 962 silver coins was dug up near Sinaw, dating back to the ‘Sasanian-Islamic’ period, where Persian rule was being taken over by Islamic rule in the 600s. If the condition of the coins and pot weren’t remarkable enough, the geography of the coins is striking. They come from local Omani sources, as well Damascus, Basra, and Baghdad, and even as far as Spain and Uzbekistan! Clearly this coin collection reflects the extent of trade in Oman at this time, and points to the importance of Sinaw and its citizens during that era. “But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.” (2 Cor. 4:7) We bless the people of Sinaw to know that they are God’s treasure, and to experience God’s extraordinary power at work in their weakness!  Holy Spirit Move in Ash-Sharqiyah North! Today, let us pray for the release of the Holy Spirit over Ash-Sharqiyah North. At Pentecost, God poured out the promised Holy Spirit, empowering the early church and drawing many to believe. Peter said in Acts 2:17-21, “What you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike—and they will prophesy.  Qiblatain Mosque Praying Towards Jerusalem The ‘qiblatain’ mosque in Ibra is one of the oldest mosques in Oman, and in the Muslim world. Built over 1500 years ago, it has two ‘qiblas’, or directions for prayer. The original qibla faces towards Jerusalem, and the second one faces towards Mecca. Originally, Mohammed and his followers all prayed towards Jerusalem, in a similar fashion as the Jews (from whom he probably learned the practice). Later, in 624, he directed his followers to pray towards Mecca after receiving revelation about it. There are only a handful of other early mosques scattered throughout the Middle East that have retained evidence of the earlier direction for prayer. When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously. (Daniel 6:10) We bless the people of Oman to go back to the ancient ways, praying to the God who made the temple in Jerusalem His resting place (cf. 2 Chron. 6).  Ash-Sharqiyah North Seekers All Who Are Hungry We know that the Father is actively at work in Oman, to begin drawing people to His Son, Jesus. Researchers estimate that approximately 2.5% of any given population are open for religious change. So in Ash-Sharqiyah North region, that means approximately 6,796 people are potentially open! ‘Broad sowing’ initiatives are challenging in Oman, because of laws outlawing proselytization. However, social media campaigns are starting to connect with seekers and beginning to bear fruit. Today, let’s pray for seekers in Ash-Sharqiyah North region, and the social media efforts to reach them.

 Al-Qabil Ones Who Accept Al-Qabil (Arabic: ٱلْقَابِل, pop. 2,959) is a town and seat of Al-Qabil District (pop. 24,824) in the Ash-Sharqiyah North Region. A traditional agricultural and trading town built around an oasis, Al Qabil is home to a thriving traditional market and has a fort dating back to the 18th-century. The area is known for its silversmithing, horse and camel breeding, and gypsum mining.  Bidiyah Door to the Desert Bidiyah (Arabic: بدية, pop. 25,683) is a town and seat of Bidiyah District (pop. 42,530) in the Ash-Sharqiyah North Region. It is the gateway to the Sharqiyah Sands desert, and the landscape here varies between sand dunes, mountains, plains, and lush oases. People have lived in this area since the 1300s, when it was first inhabited by the Hadhrami tribe originally from Yemen. The area is famous for organizing camel and Arabian horse races, events that draw enthusiasts from within and outside the Sultanate. Bidiyah also hosts the annual “Bidiyah Challenge,” a dune-bashing race of 4x4 SUVs over the desert sands. “He found them in a desert, a windy, empty land.  Dima Wattayeen Abundant Waters Dima Wattayeen (Arabic: دما والطائيين, pop. 26,493) is a district in the Ash-Sharqiyah North Region. It is noted for its abundance of water, sourced through springs, wadis, and falaj irrigation systems. This area was settled by (and named after) the Tay tribe from Yemen in the 6th century AD. This area is also well-known for horse-breeding, and in the past would trade them across the ocean to India. Now it is growing in tourism, as many come to enjoy the beautiful nature here. “For I will give you abundant water for your thirst and for your parched fields.  Wadi Bani Khalid Living Water Wadi Bani Khalid (Arabic: وادي بني خالد, pop. 12,980) is a district in the Ash-Sharqiyah North Region. It is noted for the large, beautiful wadi that it is named after, which is one of the most-visited tourist attractions in Oman. The turquoise waters are continuously fed by a spring, so the wadi has fresh water year-round. Besides swimming, hiking, and cave-exploring are also popular activities in the area. Well, I’m telling you to open your eyes and take a good look at what’s right in front of you. These [Ash-Sharqiyah North] fields are ripe. It’s harvest time! (John 4:35–MSG) Ash-Sharqiyah North has had limited Gospel witness (primarily from short-termers), with at least one known believer.  Camels Racing and Offering Camel racing is a popular sport in Oman, and especially in the Ash-Sharqiyah North region. Racing camels are bred for speed, and are highly prized possessions. A good racing camel can fetch a price of RO 30,000 (US $ 77,400). In the past human jockeys were used, but now small robots are primarily used. Camels can reach speeds of up to 64 kilometers per hour (approximately 40 mph), and usually compete by age category. Races take place in the early mornings during winter months, and are often accompanied by traditional Bedouin singing and dancing. Camels, the "ships of the desert," have played a vital role in Oman and the Arabian Peninsula over thousands of years. Camels have impacted all aspects of daily desert life. Besides being a means of travel, food and shelter, camels are also used for entertaining, celebrating and competing in festivals and special events. Their importance is even acknowledged in the Bible, as an important offering to the Lord from this region of the world. "Herds of camels will cover your land, young camels of Midian and Ephah. And all from Sheba will come, bearing gold and incense and proclaiming the praise of the Lord." (Isaiah 60:6) [Midian and Ephah were in what is now Saudi Arabia, Sheba was Yemen and Southern Oman].  Mawlid An-Nabi The Prophet's Birthday Today in Oman is 'Mawlid An-Nabi' (Arabic:مَولِد النَبي ), a national public holiday celebrating the birth of Mohammed. It can be celebrated at the mosque, or at a public event in the town center. Poems to Mohammed are recited, along with religious songs and chants. A traditional song/dance called the ‘Mawlid’ is performed, which is also done at weddings, upon moving to a new house, or curing the sick. These tributes extol his virtues as ‘the Chosen One’ and ‘the Purest of the Firstborn.’ In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom also He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.  Diplomacy and Neutrality, Part 1 Switzerland of the Middle East When Sultan Qaboos came to power in 1970, he brought the isolated Sultanate back onto the world stage. Although small in size, Oman's diplomatic influence has been significant. Located in the midst of several geopolitical powder kegs, Oman has managed not only to stay neutral, but to actively work towards peace and lead the way in reconciliation. Oman has positive relationships with Saudi Arabia and Iran, with the Palestinians and the Israelis. It has been an active mediator in regional conflicts, including the Yemen war, Iran nuclear treaty, and the Qatar embargo. Because of this role of neutrality, Oman has become known as the "Switzerland of the Middle East." “How joyful you are when you make peace! For then you will be recognized as a true child of God."
