 October Focus: Musandam Region Top of the Mountains Musandam (مُـسَـنْـدَم) is the northernmost governorate in Oman, an enclave (2, actually) separated from the rest of the country by the United Arab Emirates. It is a peninsula which sits strategically at the Strait of Hormuz, a mere 21 miles from Iran. Called the 'Norway of Arabia' because of its dramatic fjords, the region is geographically isolated by rugged mountains, and its inhabitants have traditionally been hostile to outsiders. Although growing in tourism, it is still one of the most remote and isolated places in the country. This region is also home to two unique ethnic groups, the Kumzari and the Shehi. In Arabic ‘Musandam’ means ‘anvil’, perhaps referring to its shape. This area is known locally as ‘Ru’us Al Jibal’ (Arabic: رُؤُوْس ٱلْجِبَال), meaning head or top of the mountains, indicating its position at the top of the Hijar Mountains that stretch across northern Oman. “For the Eternal is a great God, and a great King, supreme over all gods. Within His control are the very depths of the earth; the mountaintops too—they all belong to Him. The sea belongs to Him, for He created it—scooped and filled it—with His hands He made the dry land—every valley and mountain.” (Psalm 95:3-5, The Voice) We bless the people of Musandam to know and follow the God who created their unique land!

 Strait of Hormuz A Strategic Location Musandam sits at the mouth of the Persian (Arabian) Gulf in one of the most volatile spots in the world—the Strait of Hormuz (Arabic: مَضيق هُرمُز). This narrow shipping passage is the gateway to enter the Persian Gulf, and gives maritime access to Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and eastern Saudi Arabia. Approximately 17 million barrels of oil pass through this strait daily, 40% of the world’s oil, as well as ⅓ of the world’s liquid natural gas. At its narrowest, it is 33 km/21 miles across, forming a strategic ‘chokepoint’ with the capacity to cripple world energy markets if blockaded. The strait is also known locally as Baab As-salaam (Arabic: مَضيق باب السلام), meaning "the door of peace." With increased tensions in the region between Iran and other Gulf nations, it is vital to be praying for the peace of these waters and lands. God has sovereignly given this strategic territory to Oman; let us ask for His purposes to be accomplished in this region, and for His Kingdom to come and His will to be done here! "He created all the people of the world from one man, Adam, and scattered the nations across the face of the earth. He decided beforehand which should rise and fall, and when.  Khasab Fertile Ground Khasab (Arabic: خصب, pop. 21,651) is the capital and largest town of Musandam Region, and seat of Khasab district (pop. 29,688). It was built by the Portuguese in the 1600s as a supply point for their ships sailing through the Strait of Hormuz. There is a natural harbor here, and the Khasab fort was built as a supply point for dates and water for Portuguese ships sailing through the strait. Today, there is a lot of smuggling in these waters, as speedboats from Iran bring over sheep and goats, and return with electronics and cigarettes, all the while avoiding coast guard boats and oil tankers. With a new coastal road connecting it to the UAE, Khasab’s tourism is growing. It may also be reached by ferry from Oman. Day-trips in dhows (traditional wooden boats), dolphin-watching and scuba diving are popular activities. The fort has been well-restored with a museum and is also a tourist attraction. Khasab means 'fertile' in Arabic, probably referring to the fruitful mountain terraces that have been farmed for generations. May this land and the people's hearts be fertile ground for the sowing of the Gospel! “But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. 沃土

 Musandam People Groups, Part 1 The Shehi People Musandam is home to two distinct ethno-linguistic groups. The Shehi/Shihuh people are believed by some to be the original inhabitants of Oman, who were driven north to their current area by Arab Bedouin tribes coming from the south. They speak a dialect of Arabic that by some accounts is "unintelligible" to outsiders. They are also known for their unique architectural structures, such as houses built into mountain caves, and 'bait al qifl' (lock house), bunker-like storage rooms used for securing their valuables during seasonal migrations to the coast. The Shehi people also use an axe called a ‘jerz’ in Arabic, rather than the traditional ‘khanjar’ dagger. God, we pray for the Shehi people in Musandam, that they would:

謝希人

 Musandam People Groups, Part 2 The Kumzari The Kumzari people are at the tip of the Musandam peninsula, and accessible only by boat. Their origins are unclear; they may be of Iranian and/or Arab descent. They speak a hybrid of more than 45 languages, including Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, English, and Portuguese. It is thought that shipwrecked sailors over the centuries contributed to the linguistic melting pot, but now the language is on the verge of extinction. There are approximately 4500 speakers of Kumzari today. The Kumzari are traditionally fishermen, and known for their bravery in combat. The men also perform traditional dances like the Dandana, performed especially during Kumzari weddings. God, we pray for the Kumzari people in Musandam, that they would:

庫姆扎里

 Oman's Oil Economy, Part 1 Transformation Oil was discovered in Oman in 1964, and first exported in 1967. When Sultan Qaboos took over the throne in 1970, he used this newly-found oil wealth to rapidly develop the economy (and society) which previously was primarily based on agriculture and trade, and also heavily relied upon remittances from Omanis working abroad. Petroleum quickly came to dominate the economy, with some 3/4 of government revenue coming from oil. This oil prosperity was passed on to its citizens, and during the 1970's, Oman's GDP per person reached a peak growth of 1,370%! This economic and societal transformation was so remarkable, that in 2010 the UN Development Programme ranked Oman as the most improved nation in the world in the past 40 years.  Oman's Oil Economy, Part 2 Growing Pains Oman’s rapid economic growth in the past few decades has come at a cost. Foreign labor was recruited in most every field, and Omanis mainly held government jobs and received substantial government support and subsidies. Over time, this seems to have led to sizable unemployment (especially among the youth), a dampened work ethic, a sense of entitlement, and decreased entrepreneurial risk. Moreover, Oman's oil reserves are limited and expected to run out in 15-20 years. And the plunge in oil prices in the 2010s was devastating to Oman's economy and drove the government into very high debt. This plan focuses on Omanization (employing more Omanis instead of expats) and diversifying the economy away from oil dependence. Some say that as the country becomes less dependent on oil and government welfare, there may need to be a loosening of social/political control in return.  Dibba Al-Baya Ancient Markets and Battles Dibba Al-Baya (Arabic: دِبَّا ٱلْبَيْعَة, pop. 9,863) is a town and seat of Dibba Al-Baya District (pop. 10,416) in the Musandam Region. It is located on the border of the UAE and called the ‘gateway to Musandam.’ It sits on the Arabian sea, and its blue waters are rich with coral reefs, dolphins, and other marine life. Dibba Al-Baya is part of the larger Dibba area, where Dibba-Al Fujairah and Dibba Al-Hisn are part of the UAE. Although a small town now, in pre-Islamic times Dibba was an international merchant center, facilitating trade from Iraq, China, Persia and India with Arabia. This area has been under rule of the Persians, various Arab dynasties, and the Portuguese. It was the site of a key battle during the ‘Ridda Wars’, 632–634 AD, as ‘apostates’ resisted coming under Islam after the death of Muhammed. Some 10,000 people were killed at the Battle of Dibba, and the rebels were defeated. The phrase 'Day of Dibba' is still used, signifying the defeat of paganism by Islam. 'He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the shields with fire. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”' (Psalm 46:9-10) We bless the land and people of Dibba to be cleansed from the effects of war and violence. My prayer is not that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.
