 Jebel Shams Sun Mountain Jebel Shams (Arabic: جَبَل شَمْس, ) is a mountain located north of Al Hamra town. It is known as Jebel Shams (Sun Mountain) because it is supposedly the first place to receive the sunrise in Oman, due to its high peak. It is the highest mountain in the country, at 3,009 m (9,872 ft) high, and the second tallest in the Arabian Peninsula. Jebel Shams also features Wadi Ghul, a dramatically deep ravine known as the ‘Grand Canyon of Arabia.’ I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?  Bahla Forts, Pottery, and Black Magic Bahla (Arabic: بهلا) is a town (population 39,576) in Ad-Dakhiliyah region, and the seat of Bahla district (population 88,286). It is famous as the home of one of the oldest fortresses in the country, the 13th-century Bahla Fort which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress and old town are enclosed by extensive remnants of a 12-km (7.5 mile) fortified wall. This area is known for many things. Its pottery is produced from local clay, still using traditional methods dating back to 2500 BC. It is also home to Jabreen Castle, a massive three-story structure built during Al Ya'ruba dynasty in 1675, famous for its ornate woodwork and painted ceilings. And Bahla is notorious as the center of witchcraft and occult practice for Oman, and is even renowned throughout the Arab Gulf for its black magic. Pray for the Town and District of Bahla:

 Medinat Al-Sahar Bahla: The City of Magic Bahla is also known in Arabic as Medinat al-Sahar (مدينة السحر) or City of Magic. Legends and stories abound about the demonic origins of various monuments, the abundance of ‘jinn’ (demons) haunting the streets, high rates of demonic possession, and people who come here from all over the Arab Gulf for exorcisms, curses, amulets and other occult practices. One account says that the massive Bahla fort was built in one night by jinn; another account says jinn built the city walls and are stationed on it. Yet another says a mosque on a hill was also constructed overnight by the jinn. An ancient tree in the old market is said to be a source demonic possession or even death if touched. Some say Bahla is even the 'birthplace of jinn." Although many of the legends contradict each other, and it’s hard to get a clear picture of the actual spiritual landscape, one thing is certain—the demonic has a unique claim over this city. According to one account by a local man: “But in the end, this is all jinn... They want to tear us apart—our minds, communities, with arguments, disbelief, everything.  Bahla Fort A Physical and Spiritual Stronghold Bahla Fort (قلعة بهلاء) is one of the oldest and largest forts in Oman, and is the country’s only fort on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The fort was built between the 12th and 15th century by the powerful Banu Nebhan tribe, who controlled the frankincense trade at the time and made Bahla their capital. But some parts of the fort are thought to have been built before then, with artifacts found dating back as early as 500 BC. The fort was constructed of local mud-brick, and has remarkably survived through the centuries, with the occasional restoration. There are various paranormal stories surrounding the fort. Legend has it that Bahla was threatened by an attack from a neighboring kingdom and the ruler reached out to a jinn for help. The massive fort was supposedly built overnight and the enemy armies made a hasty retreat after just looking at it. Another legend says that the fort was built upon a site where a sorcerer was stoned for his wizardry, and his spirit has haunted the fort and impeded restoration ever since. According to one Omani historian who helped with the most recent restoration of the fort from 1987-2012: ‘“Bahla was the center of military, religion, and politics in that age. And powerful people attracted powerful jinn,” he admits, recalling stories of ancient Bahlawi generals who were potent enough to stand atop the fort and command the jinn.’ This fort is a stronghold in the physical realm, as well as in the spiritual realm. Let’s pray that the demonic stronghold over Bahla will come down! [Jesus] canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them on the cross. Colossians 2:14-15

 Jinn More Than Just a Genie The belief in jinn is quite prevalent in Bahla, as we’ve seen, and throughout all of Oman. In the West, if we think of a 'genie', (English form of 'jinn'), we think of Aladdin and his magical lamp. But in Oman, jinn are thought to be everywhere. If a lightbulb is flickering because it is about to go out, it is caused by a jinn. Typical Omani homes include ‘jinn lights’ in the bedrooms—small colored lamps meant to keep the jinn away while they sleep. One of the reasons Omanis burn incense in their homes daily is to keep the jinn out. If something goes wrong in your surroundings, it often is attributed to jinn making mischief, or being malevolent. Although Omanis would say that magic and occult practices are not a part of Islam, belief in jinn certainly is. Let’s go a little deeper into this belief in jinn to know better how to pray. According to one source: Among Muslims—the second-largest religious group in the world—belief in spirit beings is common, and descriptions of them are particularly vivid in Islamic texts. The Qur’an tells the story of the birth of the jinn, supernatural creatures born of “smokeless fire,” while further verses and Hadith—collections of quotes attributed to the prophet Muhammed that supplement the holy book of Islam—lay out further details of the origins and principles of jinn. These texts present an unsettling picture of jinn: extremely powerful beings made in the eyes of Allah alongside humans but with a proclivity for following the evil lead of Iblis, a haughty jinn (later to be known as Satan) who refused to bow to the superiority of Adam and subsequently vowed to lead all humans astray. Jinn also enjoy lurking in dark, unclean places, and Islamic doctrine even offers a supplication to ward off these foul spirits specifically for when entering shadowy or impure places like that bathroom: “In the name of God, I take refuge with you from all evil and evildoers." So, let us pray for Omanis today, that they would take refuge from jinn with the true and living God. Little children (believers, dear ones), you are of God and you belong to Him and have [already] overcome them [the agents of the antichrist]; because He who is in you is greater than he (Satan) who is in the world [of sinful mankind].  Bidbid Healing Springs Bidbid (بدبد) is a town (pop. 7,672) and seat of the northernmost district (pop. 37,434) in the Ad-Dakhiliyah region, adjacent to Muscat. Located within the district are eight public schools, a large Sultan Qaboos Mosque, a health center and a military complex. Fanja is the largest town in the area (pop, 14,755) and dates back more than 400 years. Bidbid is well-known for the beautiful landscape of Wadi Fanja which divides its banks into two parts. The 16th-century Bidbid fort sits along the wadi at the center of the district amongst the 40 watchtowers in surrounding villages that once defended the area. There are springs from the mountains as well as a falaj system that runs through the area.  Holy Spirit Be Poured Out in Ad-Dakhiliyah! Today, let us pray for the release of the Holy Spirit over Ad-Dakhiliyah. At Pentecost, God poured out the promised Holy Spirit, empowering the early church and drawing many to believe. Peter said in Acts 2:17-21, “What you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike—and they will prophesy. And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below—blood and fire and clouds of smoke. The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives. But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’" We want to see the Holy Spirit poured out, so that people in Ad-Dakhiliyah will call on the name of the Lord and be saved!

 Ad-Dakhiliyah Seekers All Who Are Thirsty We know that the Father is actively at work in Oman, to begin drawing people to His Son, Jesus (John 6:44). Researchers estimate that approximately 2.5% of any given population is open for religious change. So in the Ad-Dakhiliyah region, that means approximately 11,963 people are potentially open! ‘Broad sowing’ initiatives to find seekers are challenging in Oman, because of laws outlawing proselytization. However, social media campaigns are starting to connect with seekers, and beginning to bear fruit.  Izki Oman's Oldest City Izki (إزكي) is a town (pop. 35,173) and seat of Izki district (pop. 58, 905) in the Ad-Dakhiliyah region. At more than 2600 years old, it is considered one of the oldest cities in Oman. It has been a well-known meeting point for trade at the end of the route from Muscat to Nizwa, and currently comprises many villages, the most prominent being Al Yemen and Al Nizar. Al Nizar is still inhabited, but Al Yemen, which sits opposite it, has been abandoned since the 1970s. Its ruins are a popular tourist attraction, as are the ruins of the nearby village of Imti. There have been many ancient archeological finds within this area dating back to the pre-Islamic period, including those from the Early and Late Iron Ages. Izki was mentioned in Early Iron Age (640 BC) cuneiform texts, and some even believe that similar texts from Ninevah mention Izki. You can also find the Jarnan Cave within the ruins of Izki, and legend has it that before Islam entered this area, the people sought to hide a golden calf they worshiped within this cave. Lastly, Falaj al Maliki, one of the oldest and most famous falaj systems in the area, can be tied back to Malik bin Fahm al Azdi, who led the Azdi tribe out of Yemen and into Oman some 1800 years ago.  Manah Gift of God Manah (منح) is a town (population: 7,749) and the seat of Manah district (pop. 25,320) in the Ad-Dakhiliyah region. The word Manah in Arabic means ‘gift of God’, or ‘blessing’. The old town of Manah is one of Oman’s oldest archaeological sites and contains four mosques, 376 ancient houses, and almost 250 wells which are over nine centuries old. Al Fiqain castle, built in 1617, towers above the ancient ruins of the city, a dramatically beautiful site. Manah is also growing in prominence as a place for learning Arabic, as Sultan Qaboos College for Teaching Arabic to Non-Native speakers is located there. Sponsored by the Royal Court, the college aims to become one of the leaders in teaching Modern Standard Arabic to foreigners. Pray for the Town and District of Manah:

 Fanja Festivals and Rituals Fanja (فنجاء) is the largest town in Bidbid district (pop. 14,755) in the Ad-Dakhiliyah region, about 25 km from Muscat. Fanja is known for its beautiful wadis, therapeutic hot springs, watchtower ruins, and traditional market in which you can find local items such as baskets, spices, pottery, etc. Fanja is also famous for its Azwah festival, celebrating the end of the Ramadan fasting month, held during Eid al Fitr. Residents (mainly men and boys) shoot cannons and rifles, perform traditional dances and sword fights, recite poetry, and participate in highly-stylized rituals. Scholars say the celebration’s rituals may be pre-Islamic, but were later adapted into the Islamic holiday. In a similar but darker vein of pre-Islamic practices, it is also reported that Fanja is a site of animal sacrifice to jinn. Pray for the Town of Fanja:

 Samail Birthplace of Islam in Oman Samail (سمائل) is a town (pop. 29,691) and seat of the Samail district (pop. 80,402) in the Ad-Dakhiliyah region. Samail is famous for its date palm trees which blanket the area. Accordingly, there are numerous date factories located in the area. Samail is also known for the nearby valley, the "Sumail Gap," which divides the Al Hajar Mountains into the Eastern and Western subranges. This route–the main road from Muscat to Nizwa–was historically used for trade and communication between the coast and interior areas of Oman. Caravans used this passageway for trading in frankincense, and its explorers include Marco Polo and Ibn Battutah. Samail was also home to the first Muslim convert in Oman, Mazin bin Ghadubah, who adopted Islam during Mohammed’s lifetime and was an ardent spreader of the new faith. Mazin Mosque, which he built in 627 AD, is the oldest mosque in Oman. The mosque has been restored many times, but it still retains the same ancient foundations. Mazin’s tomb is also here, and is a revered attraction. Pray for the Town and District of Samail:

Well, I’m telling you to open your eyes and take a good look at what’s right in front of you. These [Dakhiliyah] fields are ripe. It’s harvest time! (MSG) Many Gospel seeds have been sown in this region, through numerous long-term and short-term Harvest Laborers. However, there currently are very few on the ground there now. Pray for their encouragement, strengthening, and protection. And let us pray earnestly to the Lord of the Harvest to send forth new Laborers there!
