 Adh-Dhahirah Region Awaiting His Appearing February's focus is the Adh-Dhahirah region (pop. 213,043), which is located in northwest Oman, bordering Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The name comes from the Arabic root, ظهر, which has multiple meanings. One is the back of body (as opposed to the neighbouring region Al Batinah, related to the root word for stomach). It also means to appear, to show, to manifest, to become visible. We want Jesus to be seen clearly for who He is in this region-that He may be made visible, manifest, and apparent here! The capital of this region is Ibri, which is from the Arabic root عبر, meaning 'to cross' or 'crossing', and was the site of ancient caravan crossroads. There are two other districts in this region, Yanqul and Dhank. Nearby there is a UNESCO world heritage site of 3000-year-old tombs, remnants of a once-thriving civilization. Oman's largest oil field is also here, operating since 1968. “Then, the Arrival of the Son of Man! It will fill the skies—no one will miss it. Unready people all over the world, outsiders to the splendour and power, will raise a huge lament as they watch the Son of Man blazing out of heaven. At that same moment, he’ll dispatch his angels with a trumpet-blast summons, pulling in God’s chosen from the four winds, from pole to pole.  Oman's Cabinet The Council of Ministers The Sultan is Oman's absolute Head of State and Head of Government. However, he delegates some of his power to a Cabinet of government ministers and other top officials, and is also advised by a Parliament to help him rule over the nation. Today we will pray for the Cabinet, known as the Council of Ministers. The Council of Ministers consists of members appointed by him to oversee various national departments and divisions. In August 2020, Sultan Haitham reshuffled the cabinet, consolidating and reforming several of the ministries. Many of the ministers are part of the royal family, including the Sultan's oldest son and heir to the throne, Thiyazan. There are three female ministers, heading the Ministries of Education, Higher Education, and Social Development. Three regions–Muscat, Musandam, and Dhofar–have governors that are also a part of the Cabinet, perhaps reflecting their ethnic diversity, and/or their geographical distance from the capital for the latter two.  Oman's Parliament The State Council Oman's Parliament, or the Council of Oman, assists the government in policymaking but does not have any power to independently legislate. It meets at the request of the Sultan and discusses issues he raises. Any decisions about recommendations are made by a majority vote. The Parliament has 2 parts, the ‘upper’ and ‘lower’ chambers. The 'upper' chamber of Parliament is the State Council, (مجلس الدولة العماني) which is comprised of 83 leaders appointed by the Sultan, who serve for 4-year terms. Members of the State Council are primarily former government officers, prominent experts in various fields, and other dignitaries. There are 15 women in the Council. May they put the needs of others before themselves and be true servant leaders. May they not be so proud that they cannot hear the wisdom of others, but instead seek out good counsel and follow it.  Oman's Parliament The Consultative Council As mentioned yesterday, Oman's Parliament, consisting of the ‘upper’ and ‘lower’ chambers, assists the government in policymaking but does not have any power to independently legislate. The 'lower' chamber is the Consultative Council or Majlis A'Shura (مجلس الشورى), which was created in 1991. It is made up of democratically elected representatives from the 63 wilayats (districts) across the country. Districts with a population greater than 30,000 can send 2 representatives to the Council. Because there are no political parties allowed in Oman, these elections are non-partisan and any citizen of good standing can run for office. These representatives also serve for 4-year terms. Help them to choose the right path when they make decisions on behalf of this nation. Give them grace and courage to make sound decisions that align with Your will for this nation.  Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you... I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:3 NLT) God promised Abraham that those who bless him and his line will be blessed, and those who come against him and his line will be cursed. This is a standing promise of God, which is still in effect. In December 2022, Oman’s Majlis Ash-Shura voted to ‘criminalize’ ties with Israel, expanding their current boycott to include any sports, cultural, or economic interactions. The new amendment also forbids any in-person or online interaction with Israelis. Previously Oman was thought to be next in line to join the Abraham Accords and normalize ties with Israel, with Netanyahu visiting Sultan Qaboos in 2018. However, it seems this will not be the case. This is thought to be because of pressure from Iran, and because of the current situation with the Palestinians. We want Oman to be blessed, and not be cursed! Pray that there would be a shift at the governmental level to normalize relations with Israel, which would bring about the blessing of God on this nation.  Ibri At the Crossroads Ibri (pop. 55,419) is the largest city in and capital of the Adh-Dhahirah region, and seat of the Ibri district (pop, 163,179). The name comes from the Arabic root عبر, meaning 'to cross' or 'crossing', and was the site of ancient caravan crossroads linking what is now Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. It sits on the foot of the Hajar Mountain chain and the edge of the vast “Empty Quarter” desert. Nearby archaeological sites date back to the Bronze Age (3000 BC), and the fort in Ibri is approximately 400 years old. This area has historically been known as a bastion of conservative Islam, tribalism, and hostility to outsiders. Today, Ibri is home to 2 universities, a large marble quarrying industry, and Oman’s largest solar energy plant. In 2021, a new highway across the Empty Quarter was opened, re-linking Ibri with Saudi Arabia. God gives an invitation to His people in Jeremiah 6:16, 'This is what the Lord says: “Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it.  Frankincense, Part 1 Oman's White Gold The frankincense trade from the south of Oman has been an influential and lucrative business for 6000+ years. This precious resin has been used in the mummification of ancient Egyptian pharaohs (including King Tut), offered in Moses' tabernacle and Solomon's temple, gifted by the Magi of Persia to infant Jesus, and extravagantly burned by Nero in Rome-an entire year’s harvest of incense at the funeral of his favourite mistress. Known in Arabic as luban (اللبان), the English word is derived from Old French 'franc encens', or 'pure incense'. Besides being burned for its sweet-smelling perfume, frankincense also has medicinal qualities. It can be chewed and swallowed directly, or soaked in water overnight and drunk. The ancients believed it to be a wonder-drug, curing everything from ulcers to asthma to skin wounds. Even today, frankincense is commonly ingested for stomach ailments, and pregnant women will chew it believing it will help produce an intelligent baby. It is thought that the frankincense trade spurred the domestication of the camel, helped spread written language, and advanced shipbuilding and global trade. Several sites around Salalah in Southern Oman have been named as UNESCO world heritage sites, collectively known as the "Land of Frankincense''. The burning of incense has long been a part of religious practice in the Middle East and beyond, from pagan temples and warding off of evil spirits, to the true worship of Yahweh. In the Bible, prayer and worship are likened to incense, wafting upwards to the heavens and being a sweet aroma to God. "My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to Me, because My name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord Almighty. (Malachi 1:11) We declare that Omanis are meant to pray to and worship the living, triune God!  Frankincense, Part 2 Quality and Production Frankincense is the gummy tree sap harvested from the Boswellia sacra tree. A tree doesn't produce resin until it is 10 years old. Each year, beginning in April, local tribesmen will strategically cut the tree bark, and the sap bleeds out and hardens for 10 days. These small 'tears' are then scraped off and collected. The farmers will cut the same spot again, over and over, until the final harvest a few months later produces the palest and purest frankincense. Traditionally, after 5 years of tapping and harvesting, a tree is left to recover for 5 years. The knarled Boswellia Sacra trees are found only in the southern Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, but the best frankincense is produced in the limestone soil and arid climate of Oman. Elevation, rainfall, and timing of harvest all affect the resin's quality. Some say the resin from Jabal Samhan or Jabal Hasik is the best in Oman. There are many grades of frankincense, determined by colour and purity. Royal green/Hojari frankincense is the finest and most valuable, in the past reserved for kings and sultans. And when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because You were slain, and with Your blood You purchased for God people from every tribe and language and people and nation." (Revelation 5:8-9)

品質與生產

 Bat Tombs Monuments of the Dead The Bat Tombs (as they are popularly known) form a large necropolis on an ancient burial ground near the village of Bat in Ibri district. They were ‘discovered’ In 1976 by a team of Danish archaeologists, and are believed to date back to 4,000 BC. It forms the most complete collection of settlements and necropolises from this era in the world, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One section of the site consists of “beehive” tombs, which contain up to five graves in each, while another section contains tombs that appear to have been communal graves. Similar structures in varying states of disrepair are scattered all across northern Oman and the UAE, the legacy of the people of Majan, an ancient Bronze Age civilization. Thank God, as believers we know there is more after death than a tomb! May the people of Oman know that as well! Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in Me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in Me and believes in Me will never ever die. (John 11:25-26)

 Black Gold Oman's Oil and Natural Gas The largest oilfield in Oman is at Yibal, in the southern area of the Adh-Dhahirah region. It was the first significant oil strike in Oman, discovered in 1962 and beginning production in 1968. At its peak, it was producing some 250,000 barrels per day, but current production is down to about 88,000 barrels per day. Liquified natural gas (LNG) was discovered in 2000 at the Khazzan liquid natural gas field, also in Adh-Dhahirah region. Production started in 2017, and it is the largest hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, project outside of the United States. Limited amounts of LNG are exported, with most being used domestically, Oman’s petroleum reserves are smaller than other nations in the Arab Gulf, and are expected to run out in 25-30 years. The petroleum boom helped finance the development of Oman, but there is concern about the nation’s future economy. These things were my assets, but I wrote them off as a loss for the sake of Christ. 阿曼的石油和天然氣

 Yanqul Fruitful Connection Yanqul (pop. 12,241) is a town and seat of the Yanqul district (pop. 26,428) in Adh-Dhahirah. This mountainous area is known for its natural beauty, heritage buildings, and agriculture, including dates, sugar cane, grapes, pomegranates, guava, and even black pepper. The 400-year–old Beit al-Marah fortress is here, which is the 3rd largest in Oman, and one of 16 forts and watchtowers in the district. The word ‘Yanqul’ (ينقل in Arabic) means 'connection', and is located in the northeastern part of Adh-Dhahirah region, connecting it to Al Buriami and North Al-Batinah regions. In this place of agricultural richness, may the people of Yanqul be connected to the Vine, united and fruitful! “I am the sprouting vine and you’re My branches.  Holy Spirit Blow Through Adh-Dhahirah! Today, let us pray for the release of the Holy Spirit over Adh-Dhahirah. At Pentecost, God poured out the promised Holy Spirit, empowering the early church and drawing many to believe. Peter said in Acts 2:17-21, “What you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike—and they will prophesy.  Eid Al-Hubb 'Holiday of Love' Although not widely celebrated in Oman, Valentine’s Day (known in Arabic as 'Eid Al-Hubb) is growing in popularity, especially among the younger generation. Today, let’s pray for the revelation of the love of God to the Omanis. God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. (I John 4:9-10)

 Dhank Darkness into Light Dhank (Arabic: ضنك) is a town (pop. 13,729) and seat of the district of Dhank (pop. 23,436) in Adh-Dhahirah region. 'Dhank' in Arabic means ‘grey, dark, depressive.’ However ominous its name, it is a quaint town at the foot of the mountains. The district has many beautiful wadis, such as Wadi Al Fateh and Wadi Qumeirah. The area is known for its agriculture, ecological diversity, and migratory birds that pass through annually. The Battle of Dhank took place in 1870, a key conflict in establishing the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman. The battle pitted forces in support of the Omani Imam, Azzan bin Qais, against the Sultan of Muscat, Turki bin Said. The battle was won by Sultan Turki bin Said, and led to the combining of the Oman Imamate in the interior with the Muscat Sultanate on the coast. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” (John 8:12) May the people of Dhank come out of darkness and follow the Light!  Power from the Sun Ibri Solar Plant Oman’s largest solar farm, Ibri 2 Solar Power Plant, is located in the desert near Ibri in Adh-Dhahirah region. Completed in 2022 by a group of companies from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and other Gulf states, the plant consists of 1.4 million solar panels and covers an area of 13 million square meters. The project is expected to power 33,000 homes, and remove 340,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions from the country’s footprint annually. The project is also part of the Sultanate’s efforts to diversify its sources of energy, which are primarily derived from fossil-fuel products such as oil and natural gas. His brightness is like the sunlight; He has bright rays flashing from His hand, And there in the sunlike splendour is the hiding place of His power. (Habakkuk 3:4) In His right hand He held seven stars, and from His mouth there came forth a sharp two-edged sword, and His face was like the sun shining in full power at midday. (Revelation 1:16)

 Adh-Dhahirah Seekers Come to the Water We know that the Father is actively at work in Oman, to begin drawing people to His Son, Jesus. Researchers estimate that approximately 2.5% of any given population are open to religious change. So in the Adh-Dhahirah region, that means approximately 5,326 people are potentially open! ‘Broad sowing’ initiatives are challenging in Oman, because of laws outlawing proselytization. In 2019 there was a clandestine literature distribution in Ibri, which sent ripples of shock and outrage throughout the nation, and resulted in several workers having to leave. However, His Word went out, and we know it does not return void. Social media campaigns are starting to connect with seekers, and beginning to bear fruit. Today, let’s pray for seekers in the Adh-Dhahirah region, and the social media efforts to reach them.

 Al-Isra' wal-Mi'raj The Night Journey to the Holy City and to Heaven Today is the Islamic holiday of al-Isra’ wal Mi’raj (Arabic: الإسراء والمعراج). The Israʾ and the Miʿraj are the two parts of a Night Journey that, according to Islam, the prophet Muhammad (AD 570–632) took during a single night around the year AD 621. Within Islam, it signifies both a physical and spiritual journey. A brief sketch of the story is in the 17th chapter of the Quran, called al-Isra', while greater detail is found in the Hadith (later collections of the reports, teachings, deeds, and sayings of Muhammad). In the Israʾ part of the journey, Muhammad is said to have travelled with the angel Gabriel on the back of Buraq (a horse-like lightning creature) from the Ka’aba in Mecca to the Al-Aqsa Mosque (i.e. the Temple Mount) in Jerusalem, where he led other prophets in prayer. In the next part of the journey, the Miʿraj, he is said to have ascended into the 7th heaven, where he individually greeted the prophets Adam, Jesus and his cousin John the Baptist, Joseph, Enoch, Aaron, Moses and Abraham one by one until he reached the throne of God. There God communicated with him, giving him words and instructions, most important of which was the commandment to Muslims to offer prayers, initially fifty times a day. At the urging of Moses, Muhammad returned to God several times before eventually reducing the number to five. Let’s pray for Omanis who are commemorating Isra’ wal Mi’raj today:

夜遊去往聖城和天堂

 The Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmed Al-Khalili, Oman's Head Religious Leader Earlier this month we prayed for various branches of the Oman government, including the Cabinet of Ministers, and the 2 houses of Parliament. For the next few days we will pray for key individuals who influence the direction of the nation. Today, let’s pray for the Grand Mufti of Oman, Sheikh Ahmad bin Hamad Al-Khalili (Arabic: أحمد بن حمد الخليلي). The Grand Mufti is the head of regional muftis, (Islamic jurisconsults) of a state. The office originated in the Ottoman empire and was later adopted in a number of modern countries, including Oman. Al-Khalili is the head religious leader in Oman, and his tweets, pronouncements and ‘fatwas’ carry significant weight in the eyes of the people and the government. Al-Khalili was born in Zanzibar (formerly part of Oman) in 1942. His tribal ancestors are from Bahla in the Dakhiliyah region, and he is a distant relative of one of the last Imams to rule the interior of Oman. In 1975 a young Sultan Qaboos appointed him as Grand Mufti by royal decree and he has served in this position for nearly 50 years. Although noted for his tolerance within the various sects of Islam, he is also known for inflammatory remarks against the West. You can watch translated excerpts of an interview with Al-Khalili here. Khalili is now 80 years old, and it is unclear who his successor will be. Let us pray for Sheikh Al-Khalili, and for his eventual successor:

 Women Leaders Rising Up To Take Their Place Today we continue to pray for influential individuals in the government of Oman. There currently are 3 women serving as heads of government ministries. Madiha bint Ahmed Al Shibaniya is the Minister of Education, and “Madiha” is a household word amongst families of school-aged students in Oman. Dr. Rahma bint Ibrahim Al Mahrooqi was appointed Minister of Higher Education by Sultan Haitham in 2020. Her predecessor, Dr. Rawiyah al- Busaidiyah served from 2004 to 2020 and was the first woman appointed to the office of Minister in Oman. Laila bint Ahmed Al Najjar is the Minister of Social Development, appointed by Sultan Haitham in 2020. These women have been pioneers in leading female participation in government, and are role models to girls and young women across the Sultanate. Let’s bless these women, and ask the Lord to raise up many more women leaders in Oman!

 The Foreign Minister Oman's Diplomat to the World Today we continue to pray for influential individuals in the government of Oman. Sayyid Badr bin Hamed al-Busaidi is the Foreign Minister of Oman (similar to the US Secretary of State) and represents Oman in international meetings and events, and before the UN. He was appointed by Sultan Haitham in 2020 to replace Yusuf bin Alawi as the chief Omani diplomat, who had served under Sultan Qaboos for 23 years. Al-Busaidi is part of the extended royal family, and his father, Hamed al-Busaidi, lived in the palace as an advisor first to Sultan Said in the 1960s, and then to Sultan Qaboos from 1970-2002. Al-Busaidi studied in the UK and entered government service in 1988 as a diplomat. He led Oman to become a member of the World Trade Organisation in 2000, and has been key in developing Oman-US ties, including the Free Trade Agreement between the two nations, signed in 2006. Al-Busaidi represents the Sultan’s interests, and it is expected that he will steer a similar course of neutrality as held in the past. However, with significant regional conflicts and security concerns (Yemen, Iran), he has a key role to play on the world stage. 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. (2 Cor. 5:18-20) Let us bless Al-Busaidi as an ambassador of reconciliation in earthly things, and may he come to know spiritual reconciliation through Jesus!

The Crown Prince Theyazin, the Future Sultan Today we continue to pray for influential individuals in the government of Oman. Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said (Arabic: ذي يزن بن هيثم آل سعيد) is the oldest son of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, born in 1990, and the heir to the Sultan’s throne. Theyazin is the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports (as was his father under the rule of Sultan Qaboos), a position he has held since 2020. He graduated from Oxford with a degree in Political Science, and last year graduated from Sandhurst Royal Military Academy. In 2021, he married Sayyida Meyyan, the daughter of Oman’s deputy prime minister for defence affairs. By me, Wisdom, princes and nobles rule, all those who govern rightly. I love those who love me, and those who diligently seek me will find me. (Prov. 8:16-17) Let us bless Theyazin as the Prince and future Sultan of Oman, that he would walk in and one day rule by divine wisdom!

 Minister of the Royal Office The Strong Arm of Power Today we continue to pray for influential individuals in the government of Oman. General Sultan bin Mohammed al Numani has been the Minister of the Royal Office and Head of the Office of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces since 2011. He is one of the most powerful men in the nation, likely second to the Sultan, and this is especially unique given he is not in the royal family. He oversees Oman’s national security and intelligence services, including the Internal Security Services (secret police). He is thought to oversee the quelling of various protests, and is rumoured to deal harshly with dissidents. General Numani is also a head member of the Défense Council, an extra-parliamentary body tasked with coordinating the actions of the country's various security and armed forces. In this role, he oversaw the transition of power upon the death of Sultan Qaboos and the accession of Sultan Haitham, including opening the sealed envelope containing the name of Qaboos’ successor. He is pictured above (in military uniform) carrying the coffin of Sultan Qaboos, alongside Sultan Haitham. A wise warrior is better than a strong one, and a man of knowledge than one of strength (Proverbs 24:5). May General Numani come to know the wisdom and knowledge of God!  Teacher's Day Today is Teacher’s Day in Oman, and educators across the nation will be celebrated today with ceremonies and gifts of appreciation. In the government school system, there are 1242 schools with 729,331 students and 57,033 teachers. There are a further 900 or so private schools with thousands of teachers, most of them expatriate. There are various issues of concern facing teachers. One is the desire to Omanize teaching positions in government schools, coupled with a lack of qualified Omani teachers. (A relatively small percentage of graduating Omanis want to become teachers.) A large number of experienced teachers have been retiring over the past three or four years, compounding the problem. Secondly, the classrooms are often overcrowded, making quality education difficult. A third area is abuse (bullying to physical and sexual abuse) at school: teacher to student and student to student. People have started talking about this more, and camera installation and other measures have started to be taken to prevent it. But there remains much more to be done. “All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children.” (Isaiah 54:13) Let’s pray for teachers today in Oman:

 Movements Rapid Multiplication of Disciples and Churches in Adh-Dhahirah We want to see the fullness of the Kingdom of God coming into every part of Adh-Dhahirah region, like yeast penetrating the entire batch of dough (Matt. 13:33). And the fastest way for this to happen is by rapidly reproducing disciples and groups (churches), who spread and multiply within and across their families, tribes, social networks, and societies. Acts 6:7 is our heart’s desire and fervent prayer: “God's word reigned supreme and kept spreading.  Horse Racing An Ancient and Enduring Sport Horse breeding and horse racing are ancient traditions for Omanis. Developed by the Bedouin for battle, the Arabian horse breed is one of the fasted and most beautiful in the world. Horses are held in high esteem by Muslims, as Muhammed called them sacred. In Oman there are often horse races and shows held during Eid holidays, to demonstrate the sportsmanship and skill of horse and rider alike. Ibri, the capital of Adh-Dhahirah region, holds an annual horse race of endurance, where horses race for 100 km (62 miles). Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. (Psalm 20:7) Horses are often seen as symbols of military strength or power. Blessing Adh-Dhahirah Salvation Appearing We want to bless Adh-Dhahirah this month with the truth from His Word about His salvation appearing.  Ripe Fields Praying for the Harvest in Adh-Dhahirah "As you look around right now, wouldn’t you say that in about four months it will be time to harvest? Well, I’m telling you to open your eyes and take a good look at what’s right in front of you. These [Adh-Dhahirah] fields are ripe. It’s harvest time!" (John 4:35 MSG) There has been little intentional Gospel witness living in Adh-Dhahirah region. However, it is thought some Harvest Laborers will be moving to Ibri soon. Pray for open doors and open hearts that would welcome them. And let us pray earnestly to the Lord of the Harvest to send forth new Laborers there!
